UNCG Helping Hand Project Donates 3D Printed Child Prosthetics

The Helping Hand Project (HHP) student chapter at UNC Greensboro is back in full swing following COVID-19 delays, creating 3D-printed prosthetic devices for children with limb differences at no cost to their families.

A significant dilemma in the realm of child prosthetics is that children regularly outgrow their devices—and replacements are pricey. By virtue of 3D printing’s cost-effectiveness and ease of production, the HHP is able to resize, modify and provide replacement parts for the prosthetics it creates without needing to charge families. In December of 2020, despite COVID restrictions on campus, the students were able to 3D print a prosthetic arm and deliver it just in time for Christmas.

The UNCG student chapter is also dedicated to fostering a support network among local families by planning children’s activities and other aspects of the HHP’s bi-annual family event. The student chapter’s operations are conducted in the Digital Media Commons in Jackson Library, headed by HHP student president and self-taught printer Grace Kang.

I would love to assist in coordinating an interview with Grace Kang and faculty advisor Cheryl Cross to further discuss the program and its importance to those that are financially and medically in need.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration. I look forward to connecting with you!
